Following universal condemnation of SimCity's "always-online" DRM, its publisher EA has said it's "looking into" an offline mode.
SimCity executive producer Lucy Bradshaw took to the official SimCity Twitter account to apologise to customers and say: "We have no intention of offlining SimCity any time soon but we'll look into that as part of our earning back your trust efforts."
Not the most positive statement for the legions of gamers who still can't play a game they've paid for and are being refused refunds, but it's a start.
She continued: "We're definitely looking into this as we know it would improve your experience," though there is some debate over whether this second tweet referred to an "offline mode" or a previous question about map size.
EA has continually insisted that the game's "always-on" DRM system is crucial to the game's economic systems -- giving players the ability to trade resources with other nearby cities.
However, detractors have pointed out that it also functions very effectively as an anti-piracy tool, and asked whether it began life for that reason, and was later given a justification in the game's mechanics.
Meanwhile, Amazon briefly suspended sales of the game due to EA's server woes, but reinstated it after a few hours complete with a warning about the issues customers are experiencing. |
