第一個擁有地下鐵路系統的亞洲國家是日本，第二個是中華人民共和國，建造平壤地下
<br />鐵路系統，使朝鮮成為亞洲第三個擁有地下鐵路系統的國家，它是整個的市內深層隧道
<br />，主要運用大量勞工以人手來建造。這個計劃是金正日將軍在1966年提出的，當時他正在中
<br />華人民共和國的北京市訪問，那時，北京市正在興建地下鐵路和地下行人隧道。兩條路線同時在
<br />1968年開始，在中國及前蘇聯的幫助下。千里馬線在1973年9月6日(星期四)建成開放通車，由烽
<br />火(Ponghwa)至復興(Puhung)的延長線在1987年4月10日(星期五)開通。

<br />革新線在1975年10月開放，從革新(Hyoksin)到樂園(Rakwon)，後來在1978年9月，又從革新
<br />(Hyoksin)廷長至光復(Kwangbok) 。部分小道消息來源表示它的原本廷長終點站本來是光明
<br />(Kwangmyong) 及黃金埔(Hwanggumbol)，後來在1985年，兩端均被廷長至樂園(Rakwon) 及光復
<br />(Kwangbok) 。
