Recommended Configuration
In order to be able to use the full feature set of the NAM and still run SimCity 4 at an comfortable speed on your computer, the following configuration is recommended:
a 64-bit CPU with at least 4 GB of memory, and the 64-bit version of Windows Vista or later.
Better graphics cards will tend to speed up the game a bit, but anything beyond a mid-range graphics card will have very little effect on the game’s speed.
A faster CPU is useful especially if you’re playing large cities; despite being more than ten years old, this game can use all the CPU power you can give it, due to the exponential growth in CPU usage of the traffic simulator as your cities increase in size.
If you are going for maximum CPU power for the game, it is good to remember that the game runs single-threaded, so the best CPU for this game would typically be the latest version of the Intel Core i5 (unless you want to spend a lot more money); the additional hyperthreading of the Core i7 is unfortunately of no use to SimCity 4.
As SimCity 4 is a 32-bit program, it can use a maximum of 4 GB of virtual memory on a 64-bit version of Windows. This means that you may gain a bit of a performance boost by having more than 4 GB of physical memory installed on your machine, especially since later versions of Windows use extra memory for caching in a very efficient way. However, unless you are running other memory-intensive programs, you are unlikely to see any significant gains in performance by adding memory in excess of 8 GB.
Virtually any modern hard drive will meet the disk requirements for this game. To be sure you have enough room for the game and all your plugins, it is recommended to reserve at least 10 GB for hard drive space.
Using an SSD instead of a hard drive and storing your whole SimCity 4 hierarchy (including your plugins) on the SSD can cut load times significantly.
And speaking of load times, the best way to reduce both load times and the time required to return from the Zones or NAM Subway Building View is to use the DatPacker. Full information on downloading, installing, and using the DatPacker can be found on its dedicated board (1) at SC4 Devotion.
Version 7 or later of Java is strongly recommended if you use the NAM.
Java is used in two places in the NAM.
First, it is used to run a compiler that builds a custom network controller that is specifically tailored for your installation. This allows the controller to be as small as possible, optimizing game loading times and some aspects of the game’s running time. Without Java, the installer will use the full standard controller, which will be somewhat slower in these aspects; the fewer NAM options you install, the greater the difference will be.
The second use for Java is to run the Traffic Simulator Configuration Tool (TSCT). The TSCT allows a wide variety of customization options for your traffic simulator. Without Java, the TSCT cannot be run, but there are still a few choices of traffic simulator capacity available.
